Children in Church

Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.  Luke 18:16b

As a parent of a young child, I have to remind myself of this verse, especially, ironically, when I am in church.  In church, my foster son likes to make loud noises when the service is silent, bang his cars around on the metal folding chairs, and run and laugh and cry.  Well, basically, he acts the same at church as he does at home.
I have to remind myself that his noises and imaginary play are beautiful things, not annoyances.  He comes to church without inhibition, unafraid to be completely himself.  Maybe we all need to take a cue from him.                                                          Rev. Jazzy Bostock, Forward Day by Day.

In the places where we worship as Church of the Ascension we don’t have metal folding chairs but we do have children, a growing number of them.  As a community, we have been showered with many blessings and the delights of our children’s ministry with the significant burgeoning of the Sunday School is one such blessing.  This is God’s work.  We are grateful and it is with a sense of joy and thankful hearts that we recognize God’s hand in this and in every part of our vibrant Christ-centered community.

So, when you hear children in church, notice and celebrate their presence.  Remember the Scripture stating “Let the little children come to me”, remember too that the noises we hear are a thing of beauty reflecting presence without inhibition, and take a moment to pray in gratitude and thanksgiving for how God is transforming us and especially for the children, their Sunday School leaders and for the parents or guardians who care for them.  May God continue to bless us abundantly with children in our midst and may we serve them well as they enrich our community.
