Why is the sanctuary of our host church Emmauskirche closed?
The Emmaus Church not only stands in the centre of Harlaching but also serves as our central anchor for shared worship services, festivals, and events. Unfortunately, the church has had to remain closed since autumn 2023 due to problems with the roof structure. This was based on the findings of experts after extensive sampling to ensure no one is exposed to danger. The closure is purely a precautionary measure. It is not in imminent danger of collapsing, but no one can guarantee the safety of church visitors.
What was found?
When the church was built in 1964, materials used for the roof structure are now known to potentially cause problems after several decades. During the examination of samples taken from the roof beams in late autumn 2023 it was found that, from a structural perspective, the full load-bearing capacity of the roof structure cannot be guaranteed, in particular with regard to the adhesive joints of the support beams. Architects, structural engineers, experts from the Technical University of Munich and the Munich Municipal church authorities were involved.
What can be done?
We don’t know the exact details yet. Various options are currently being considered:
Internal support
Reconstruction of the roof
At present, Emmaus is working with experts to find the best possible technical solution. Additionally, they are in discussion with the relevant church authorities about funding the construction project, which will far exceed their own financial resources.
When can the sanctuary be used again?
Unfortunately, we don’t know that yet.
Concrete planning will begin in July 2024. By December 2024 we hope to receive commitments for funding from the Bavarian state church. Only after that can we proceed with the next steps toward realization. In the best-case scenario, initial construction work could start in the spring of 2025.
Is it likely that the church will stay closed?
No. The Munich municipal church leadership has already indicated that Emmaus Church is a crucial component for the neighborhood and the parish. The vibrant community life, the large annual confirmation group, and the active musical life with the Munich Concert Choir all require appropriate church space.
However, the decline in membership within the Evangelical Church is also affecting the Emmaus congregation. Therefore, when planning major construction projects, we must also consider the future 30 or 40 years down the line: becoming more open and sustainable is the major goal of the Emmaus congregation.
What has to be stopped now?
Worship services are still taking place but in the parish hall.
For major services, such as the Easter Vigil or confirmations, we are allowed to celebrate in the neighboring Catholic churches. We are very grateful to the Harlaching Parish Association for this, as it strengthens ecumenical ties.
This will certainly cost us money!
Emmaus cannot specify exact amounts yet but estimate that at least 2 million euros will be required, of which Emmaus will need to raise as much as possible themselves. Emmaus rely on your support.
What can we do right now?
Emmaus has established a fundraising team and will organize various events to gather support and donations from the neighborhood and beyond. Emmaus is always looking for dedicated Emmaus fans who want to support us with advice, assistance and expertise.
